On 22 September 2022, Warwick District UNA and Mid-Warwickshire Amnesty Group will host Mr Ahmed Hassen from Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) who will address the meeting about on-going internal conflicts and international politics relating to the Horn of Africa.
Ahmed will address the meeting on the current politics and international issues relating to Somalia, Ethiopia and with Eritrea the more concerning the on-going war with Tigray – the Horn of Africa which is very much in the news.
There has been a long history of rivalry between Ethiopia and Sudan. In the 1990s, Sudan supported militant Islamist groups while Ethiopia backed the Sudanese opposition. all culminating into the division of Sudan with South Sudan as a separate nation. Then there is the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea where the UN Monitoring Group had been deployed. Then there was the Eritrean-Ethiopian war for twenty years with a final peace only agreed in 2018. Then there are Eritrean troops fighting in Tigray.
Ahmed will give us a better understanding of the complexities of international politics within these countries and the role of various political factions/stakeholders etc. Has the international community especially the UN failed these governments to bring about just peace and what more can be done to prevent civil wars in that region?
