7 April 2024 marks the twentieth anniversary of the start of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
The United Nations General Assembly has designated 7 April as the International Day of Reflection and encouraged UN member states, international organizations and civil society organizations to observe the International Day, including special observances and activities in memory of the victims of the genocide in Rwanda.
During the 100 days or so following 7 April, members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, as well as some moderate Hutu and Twa, were killed by armed militias during the Rwandan Civil War. Around 500,000 to 662,000 Tutsis were put to death, mostly with machetes.
