Devastation and Defiance in Ukraine: 100 days of war that is reshaping Europe
It’s been 100 days since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine and events on the ground remain complex and fast-moving. There are many questions which are being asked and need answering about how the war is progressing and whether Ukraine can survive the Russian onslaught? Has Russia’s ground offensive practically stalled? What further Ukrainian territory will Russia look to occupy, if any? When are countries going to stop acting scared of Russia and stand up to them? Are there any moves to remove Putin out of power and are the oligarchs organised, powerful and motivated enough to oust Putin? What impact if any has oil and gas sanctions on Russia and will it cripple Putin`s war machine?
“More disturbingly, the anxiety to see an end to the war has encouraged some in the west to promote the idea of a ceasefire with concessions, when Ukraine itself does not support the idea. Assumptions about the primary roles of Russia and the west in ending the conflict deny the agency of Ukrainian state actors, civil society and ordinary citizens engaged in extraordinary acts of courage. This is a war about Ukraine’s survival, being fought by Ukrainians; it is for them, not for neo-colonial voices elsewhere in Europe or the US, to decide when it is time to negotiate. – A quote taken from Ruth Deyermond`s recent article.
