Reflection on COP26 – What happened, what does this mean and what happens next?
Chris Philpott has been a green activist for 40 years and a member of Warwick District UNA for over 30 years. He has always tried to campaign against Climate Change and attended meetings at the U.N. Climate talks at Copenhagen, Paris and Glasgow. He has expertise in world spiritual traditions and the current Climate Emergency and has just published a book on Amazon “The Climate Emergency and Green Spirituality Activism- a last chance to change our values?”
In his talk Chris will draw upon his knowledge of climate change and green activism and his experiences at COP26 to explore the following themes.
- The continued investment in fossil fuels contrary to scientific advice and moral guidance and his involvement in the protest against J.P. Morgan.
- Climate Justice and reparations for poorer countries suffering the worst affects of climate change and his experience meeting delegates from Africa concerned about this issue.
- The debate on how to achieve political change within the time scale necessary and use of civil disobedience by Extinction Rebellion.
- The effect of absence at the talks by China, Russia and Australia.
- An overall assessment of the success or failure of the negotiations.
