I have ended six wars – more Trump lies?
In 2009 US President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and now Donald Trump is doing everything he can to get one. This includes his normal tactic of telling lies, in this case by saying that he has ended six wars since he became president. Is this true?
Trump and his administration claim he has helped settle the conflicts between Israel and Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda-backed M25 rebels, Cambodia and Thailand, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. But in an article on 19 August 2025 the Guardian says these claims are “embellished” and in some cases “contradicted by the facts”. The BBC has also analysed his remarks.
So what are the facts?
The six day war between Israel and Iran followed Trump’s bombing of Iran. One could argue that precipitated the ceasefire, so let’s say that’s one war Trump ended.
Fighting continues between DRC and M25, so that conflict has not ended.
The recent ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia was mainly brokered by Malaysia although Trump said he had spoken to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia.
Regarding ceasefire between India and Pakistan, The Hindu reports that New Delhi has consistently denied Trump’s claims that he was instrumental in bringing about the May 10 ceasefire between the two countries.
Trump claimed to have prevented an outbreak of hostilities between Serbia and Kosovo but they were not at war and Serbia has denied it had any plans to pursue a war with Kosovo.
The last war between Egypt and Ethiopia was from 1874 to 1876, a little before Trump’s time. The countries have not been at war since, although there are tensions between them over a dam on the River Nile.
So Trump could claim to have stopped one war, not six. This is perhaps typical of Trump: one truth and five lies.
But Trump is so determined to win the Nobel Prize for Peace that he called the finance minister of Norway to ask about a nomination for the prize. And he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by world leaders including his great friend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in July who is himself accused of the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts as well as using starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally attacking civilians.
