Legal Aspects of United Nations
The United Nations functions as a legal framework for addressing global issues.
The UN Charter is the foundational document of international law. It establishes principles such as the sovereign equality of all states, the prohibition of the use of force, and the obligation of member states to act in good faith. These principles are currently under increasing strain. As a charter and constituent treaty, the UN Charter’s rules are binding on all member states and supersede other treaties. However some member states seem more and more willing to break these rules.
The UN is mandated to promote respect for and observance of international law, justice, and human rights for all. It is effective? If not, how could it be made more so.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is engaged with settling legal disputes between states and providing advisory opinions. The UN also helps create and enforce international law in diverse areas like human rights, environmental protection, and counter-terrorism, and provides technical assistance to member states.
We are interested in exploring these and other legalistic aspects of the UN. We also want to explore geopolitics and UN documents dealing with the rights of humans, organisations and nations.
