Lajcák is a law graduate from the Comenius University in Bratislava. He holds a Ph.D. in international relations from the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow and is also a graduate of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Lajcák, 53, is a third-time foreign minister in the leftist government led by Prime Minister Robert Fico and served as both the High Representative and the EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Slovakia nominated Miroslav Lajcak as their candidate for UN Secretary-General on 26 May 2016.
