UK Elected to UNESCO Executive Board
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is one of the specialised agencies of the United Nations. It was founded in London in 1945. For over 75 years UNESCO’s aim has been to foster peace through building mutual understanding between the peoples of the world.

UK Elected to UNESCO Executive Board
At the 42nd UNESCO General Conference held in Paris in 2023, the United Kingdom was elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO with an impressive 150 votes. It is represented by Anna Nsubuga, the UK’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.
She is based at the British Embassy in Paris. Her areas of expertise include further education and adult learning, girls and women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights, European affairs, and stakeholder engagement.
UK National Commission
The UK National Commission supports the UK’s contribution to UNESCO and brings the benefits of UNESCO to the UK. Its core functions are:
- To provide expert, individual policy advice to the UK central and devolved governments on UNESCO-related issues.
- To support the UK government’s agenda to help UNESCO achieve its core goals.
- To advise and assist individuals and institutions in the UK and its’ Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, with accessing UNESCO accreditation and prizes.
- To support and enhance the value of the UK’s 165 UNESCO sites and projects.
It is financed by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
