The TUC describes the event as follows
For the past few months UK news has been dominated by the bushfires in Australia with lives lost and homes destroyed. At the same time fres of a different kind have been raging in Latin America. From Haiti and Honduras in the north to Chile in the south the last three months of 2019 saw massive street protests and strikes in one country after another. In Chile the spark was a rise in metro fares that produced a mass uprising that almost brought down the government and left at least 20 dead from police oppression. In Bolivia a de facto coup took place where an elected president, Evo Morales, was told by the military to leave the country. This resulted in mass street protests. In Venezuela the USA tried to orchestrate a coup against the democratically elected president, Nicolas Maduro, by recognizing a second-rate politician, Juan Guaido, as the country’s president.
All of these are merely symptoms of a deeper malaise affecting the whole of Latin America. Decades of poverty, inequality, discrimination, oppression and rising fuel prices have ignited huge swathes of the population in each country. Added to these are draconian economic policies of USA and IMF supported governments that have only benefited the rich. The USA in particular has used every means to impose its Monroe doctrine which states that Latin America is its backyard and it therefore decides what happens there.
Now is your chance to hear first-hand reports of events in Latin America. Now is your chance to meet and discuss what we in the labour movement in the UK can do to defend and enhance the process of social change taking place in that continent. Come and listen, ask questions and contribute to the debate.
