UN Peacekeeping in the 2020s: Challenges and Opportunities
The video below shows a presentation by David Curran, Associate Professor, Centre for Peace and Security, Coventry University delivered for UNA Harpenden’s Public Lecture.
International forms of conflict management are in a period of change. The number of personnel deployed to multilateral peace operations fell by more than 40 per cent between 2015 and 2024, large missions in Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have either withdrawn or shut down, and the UN is having to deal with a considerable financial challenge. David’s talk will explore the current landscape, asking where the UN is at in terms of its peace operations capacity, and what we may see in the future.
David Curran is the Research Theme Lead for Security and Resilience at Coventry University. David’s primary research investigates the interaction between the fields of conflict resolution and military peacekeeping. David is the author of More than Fighting for Peace? Conflict Resolution, UN Peacekeeping, and the Role of Training Military Personnel.
