UNGASS2016 – Discussion of World Drugs Problem
In 2009 the UN published a “Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem”. However, the world seems to be loosing the so-called “War on Drugs”. In 2016, illegal drugs still lie at the root of much criminal activity and human misery.
Recognising this failure, many countries or departments within countries are de-criminalising the use of some drugs. Pressed by drug war–fatigued Latin American leaders, from 19 to 21 April 2016 the UN General Assembly is running a Special Session on the World Drugs Problem (UNGASS2016).
