21:00 UK time on 31 May 2024 will be the closing time for entries into PLURAL+, the youth video festival on migration, diversity and social inclusion.
Embracing the transformative power of storytelling, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) have opened the application for the 2024 edition of the PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival, inviting global youth to submit short videos on pressing social issues. This year, PLURAL+ will continue to illuminate the enduring themes of migration, diversity, and social inclusion, while also spotlighting two special categories focusing on combatting xenophobia and fostering inclusive climate action.
“Film has often powerfully depicted the experiences of migrants, exploring their journeys, challenges, and the impact of migration on their experiences, lives and identities.” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “For the last 16 years and going strong, we are proud that PLURAL+ continues to inspire storytellers through the medium of film, to uniquely capture the nuances of these experiences, fostering empathy and solidarity across communities.”
Now in its 16th edition, PLURAL+ encourages diverse youth to use innovative storytelling techniques — be it narrative fiction, documentary, animation, or any genre — to challenge stereotypes, promote dialogue, and advocate for social cohesion. Submissions should aim to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding migration and diversity, promote dialogue and understanding among diverse communities and advocate for social inclusion and equality for all individuals, regardless of background.
PLURAL+ 2024 International Jury Distinctions will be presented to three videos for the three age categories (12 years old and under; 13 to 17 years old; and 18 to 25 years old). These videos will be selected by a panel of renowned Jury members and experts in their field.
Additionally, UNAOC and IOM will confer two Special Recognitions this year:
- The Special Recognition for Combating Xenophobia and Discrimination will be conferred to a film that advocates for mutual respect and depicts the pressing global issues of xenophobia and discrimination, particularly when based on ethnicity, religion, or belief, such as antisemitism, Christianophobia, Islamophobia, or other forms of religious intolerance.
- The Special Recognition for Inclusive Action on Climate Migration will be granted to the best short film that explores the nexus between challenges and opportunities linked to climate change and migration, while also advocating for inclusive approaches that address the intersecting strengths and vulnerabilities of diverse communities.
Selected films will be showcased at the PLURAL+24 Annual Ceremony, which is scheduled for Autumn 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal, and will be broadcast live through UN Web TV and livestreamed on the PLURAL+ website. During the Ceremony, young filmmakers will have an opportunity to present their work to a global audience.
