Trump withdraws US from UN Climate Convention and other climate bodies
On 20th January 2025 we reported “President Trump – A Disaster for World’s Climate”. Now, on 8 January 2026, things have got even worse.
He has withdrawn the US from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and many other environmental international organisations.
Having notifying the UN of his intentions, the withdrawals will take effect next year. But in the past year Trump’s US has already failed to meet a number of its UN climate treaty obligations, including reporting its emissions and funding the UNFCCC. He has prevented his scientists and representatives from attending recent climate summits.
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said “While all other nations are stepping forward together, this latest step back from global leadership, climate cooperation and science can only harm the US economy, jobs and living standards, as wildfires, floods, mega-storms and droughts get rapidly worse.”
