Engaging more young people in UNA-UK
UNA Coventry sent the following message to Jane Kinninmont, UNA-UK Chief Executive Officer, on 27 January 2026.
Dear Ms Kinninmont,
The UNA-UK Strategy 2026-2030 says:
“Our existing membership is aging and expresses a strong interest in engaging intergenerationally and bringing in more young people.”
UNA Coventry has over 70 volunteers, almost all of them are under 26. We have a lot of experience recruiting young people into our group. We recruit most of our volunteers by having tables at university Volunteer Fairs. We find that students are very interested in finding out more about the United Nations.
Your strategy goes on:
“We can build on UNA-UK traditions of school and university outreach, ongoing interest in Model United Nations and student UN societies, and interest in UN careers, to reengage with younger-generation members, supporters, and potential members. This could be achieved with help from volunteers in UNA Groups.”
One of UNA Coventry’s volunteers, Danila Mikheev, who is a student at the University of Warwick and has experience of Model United Nations, has suggested that UNA Coventry should have a table at the forthcoming
MUN London to be held May 29 April – 1 May 2026, and perhaps others within the UK. More information at https://mymun.com/conferences/mun-london-2026
As the Secretary of UNA Coventry I agree with him, but I don’t think that it would be appropriate for representatives from this Branch to attend these events since they attract MUN groups from around the UK and indeed from around the world.
I would like to suggest that UNA-UK should have such a presence and be able to refer delegates to the UNA Group nearest to their place of residence, whether in the UK or elsewhere. I am happy to talk to you about this idea if it is of interest to UNA-UK.
Regards,
Philip Brown
