Nearly three years into Sudan`s war, violence and famine are looming in many parts of the country and civilians remain trapped in shifting lines. As the conflict approaches its third anniversary next month, fighting continues to spread. The front lines have fluctuated in North Darfur, North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, with drone attacks and aerial strikes by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) becoming a defining feature of this conflict.
Unfortunately the world`s attention is focused on the Trump Administration`s foreign policy which is “might is right” and its current war in Iran and Putin`s war over Ukraine mean that the Sudan conflict is no longer making headlines. Various UN Agencies are urging to take stronger international resolve on the ongoing civil war.
Unified messaging and strong action by the Security Council is more important than ever and pressure must be brought on the parties and those who back them to end the war quickly. Sadly the UN Security Council`s attention is elsewhere and powerless as two of its two permanent members of the Council are at war!
